Roaming Roanoke: Green Hill Park

This week’s Roaming Roanoke destination is a park – Green Hill Park in Roanoke County!

School is back in session and we are adjusting back to a schedule after being home for six months due to the Covid pandemic. When school was out on Friday, my oldest child said he only wanted to play over the weekend! He specifically chose Green Hill Park.

The Green Hill Park Playground is a favorite for so many! It has lots and lots of slides! It also has climbing areas, teeter-totters, and many swings! The playground has something for all age groups! All three of my kids can spend hours on the playground! There are benches around the playground, so parents can sit down and easily watch your kids. There are swings last for babies, toddlers, and older kids.

The playground is not the only attraction at Green Hill Park. There are ball fields for games or practice. This past weekend, I saw several softball players playing on one field and a few parents helping preschool age kids practice baseball. The soccer fields looked popular too.

Green Hill Park has lots of wide open green space for whatever you want to do – play games, sports, have a picnic, lay on the grass, bring your pet, etc. The possibilities are endless!

There is plenty of room on the greenways for exercise or leisurely strolling. The greenway is listed as ten feet wide, so lots of room for all. The mountains surround the area, so in a few weeks, the fall colors might be pretty to look at too!

Green Hill Park has several picnic shelters and grills are available. You can rent a picnic shelter for gatherings from Roanoke County Parks.

Green Hill Park also has access to water for both fishing and playing. This area always has people enjoying it! The water area is great for all ages!

There are also trails! The blog Adventure Us takes a look at those! Check it out for hiking at Green Hill Park!

Green Hill Park has plenty of parking spaces for whichever area you want to visit. There are port-a-potty bathrooms set up in various locations, including by the playground, water, and picnic shelter. Most of the park is stroller-friendly – thankful the greenway is paved for easy walking with a stroller!

My kids always love going to Green Hill Park, especially the playground! Maybe we will see you there sometime!

Do you have a suggestion for where Roaming Roanoke should visit this fall? Let me know!
